Born in Argentina, Sebastian Cohen began his musical studies at an early age at the Provincial Music Conservatory. He later graduated as National Music Professor specializing in piano from the National Music Conservatory López-Buchardo in Buenos Aires. After graduating, he pursued his studies at the Universidad Católica Argentina, where he concluded an Specialized course on Orchestral Conducting under the tutorship of Guillermo Scarabino. In parallel, he carried out musical composition studies with Maestro Juan Carlos Zorzi, piano improvement studies with Maestra Alicia Sciancalépore, and conducting lessons with renowned international conductors such as Luis Gorelik, Javier Logiogia and David del Pino.

Between 1995 and 1997, Sebastian participated in the Segunda Academia Internacional Bach Course under the direction of Helmuth Rilling, and the Orchestral Conducting Courses of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires taught by Jean Fournet and Kurt Masur. In 1997 he was awarded a scholarship from the Fundación Teatro Colón at the Young Conductors Contest, organized by the Orquesta de Cámara de la Biblioteca del Congreso de la Nación. During that same year, he conducted the Orquesta Juvenil del Consejo del Menor y la Familia and was guest conductor of the Mercosur Youth Symphony.

In 1998 Sebastián became the Artistic Director of the Corrientes Province Symphony Orchestra. After being awarded a scholarship from the Fundación Antorchas, he conducted the Orquesta Académica del Teatro Colón during the Second Regional Program of Specialization and Performance on Orchestra Conduction, taught by Guillermo Scarabino.  In addition, in 2002 he was appointed assistant conductor at the Radio Nacional Youth Orchestra. During that same year, while conducting the Camerata Académica del Teatro Argentino de la Plata, he completed advanced conducting courses with Stefano Cucci and Dominique Fanal.

In 2003 Sebastian was awarded a scholarship by the Conductors Institute of South Carolina and pursued Conducting courses with Dr. Donald Portnoy. In 2005, he attended the Orchestra Conducting Course taught by Charles Dutoit with the Orquesta Académica del Teatro Colón, where he performed at the closing of the event. In 2006, he participated at the VIII Curso Internacional de Dirección Orquestal with the University of Concepción (Chile) Symphony Orchestra taught by Luis Gorelik.

In 2008, Sebastian began his doctoral studies (D. Mus.) at the University of Montreal under the direction Maestri Jean-François Rivest and Paolo Bellomia having Mahler’s work as the main subject of his Research. He has been assistant director of the Orchestre 21, the University of Montreal Symphony Orchestra , and the University of Montreal atelier de musique contemporaine.  In 2009, Sebastian became assistant director of the Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne (OFC), where he actively contributed to the orchestra’s first integral recording of Beethoven’s symphonies.

In August of 2011, Sebastián was appointed Musical and Artistic director of the Orchestra of the Escuela Superior de música of the National Center for the Arts in Mexico City. In addition, he became a regular Guest conductor of the Orchestra of the Escuela superior de música y danza de Monterrey. In December 2011 he made his Mexican debut with a presentation at the prestigious Palacio de Bellas Artes. In January 2012 he conducted the opening concert of “La Superior Música Fest” at the Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey. In 2017 he became Artistic and Music Director of the Orchestra of the University of Panama. He also became guest conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Panama.

Finally, Mtro. Cohen has developed extensive studies of musical analysis. Among them, it is worth highlighting his analytical study of the work of Gustav Mahler, who was chosen by the Carlos Chávez National Center for Musical Research, Documentation and Information (Mexico) to be part of its 2015 cycle of dissertations aimed at scholars and music students. In 2017 he joined the University of Panama as a Professor on Conducting and Music. He is also a member of the Doctoral Committee of the Music School of the University of Panama.
